CC7 Material Characterization
Material characterization was performed on the various layers constructed as part of the CC7 construction. Acceptance and characterization tests were performed on subgrade, subbase, base, and asphalt concrete materials.
Each of the tests is explained, and then each layer constructed is listed and the tests associated with the layer are listed.
Tests Performed
CBR - California Bearing Ratio was performed in accordance with ASTM D4429 and used as acceptance criterion.
Drive Cylinder - was performed along with each CBR test performed and in accordance with ASTM D2937 and was used as part of the acceptance testing.
Vane Shear - was performed at each CBR location and in accordance with ASTM D2573 and was used as part of the characterization testing.
LWD - Lightweight Deflectometer was performed in accordance with ASTM E2583 and was used as part of the characterization testing.
D-PSPA/PSPA - Portable Seismic Properties Analyzer is a nondestructive testing device that measures the seismic modulus of a material. It is used for characterization of materials.
DCP - Dynamic Cone Penetrometer was performed in accordance with ASTM D6951 and was used as part of the characterization testing.
Sand Cones - were performed in accordance with ASTM D1556 and used as acceptance criterion.
Nuclear Density Gauge - tests were performed in accordance with ASTM D6938 and used as acceptance criterion.
Materials Tested
P-152 Subgrade (DuPont Clay)
Acceptance Tests
CBR test results were used as the primary acceptance criterion. The target CBR value was 5.5 for the Perpetual Pavement Test (north) side and 5.0 for the Overload Test (south) side. Each lift of subgrade, including the bottom layer, was divided into three sublots (see figures below).
CC7 North (Perpetual Pavement Test) Subgrade Acceptance Sublots (click to Zoom)
CC7 South (Overload Test) Subgrade Acceptance Sublots (click to Zoom)
Acceptance measurements were made on each sublot of completed subgrade on the north (Perpetual Pavement Test) and south (Overload Test) side test items. A random testing location was generated to determine the testing location in each sublot. Three CBR penetrations were made within one foot of each other at the random location in each sublot. The average of the three penetrations was considered as an individual CBR test for the sublot.
CBR tests were performed at the top of every lift of subgrade and drive cylinder tests were performed at the same locations as the CBR tests and at the same time as the CBR tests.
Characterization Tests
Vane Shear - tests were performed at offsets -25 ft, -15 ft, and -5 ft corresponding to the north (Perpetual Pavement Test) side and +5 ft, +15 ft, and +25 ft corresponding to the south (Overlay Test) side. Tests were performed at these stations: 0+15, 0+30, 0+65, 0+80, 1+15, 1+30, 1+65, 1+80, 2+15, 2+30, 2+65, and 2+80. Additional Vane Shear tests were also performed at the CBR test locations.
LWD - tests were performed at the top of each lift of the subgrade at offsets -25 ft, -15 ft, and -5 ft corresponding to the north (Perpetual Pavement Test) side and +5 ft, +15 ft, and +25 ft corresponding to the south (Overlay Test) side. Tests were performed these stations: 15, 30, 65, 80, 115, 130, 165, 180, 215, 230, 265, and 280.
D-PSPA - tests were performed at the top of each lift of the subgrade at offsets -25 ft, -15 ft, -5 ft corresponding to the north (Perpetual Pavement Test) side and +5 ft, +15 ft, and +25 ft corresponding to the south (Overlay Test) side. Tests were performed at these stations: 0+15, 0+30, 0+65, 0+80, 1+15, 1+30, 1+65, 1+80, 2+15, 2+30, 2+65, and 2+80.
DCP - tests were performed at the top of the subgrade at offsets -25 ft, -15 ft, -5 ft corresponding to the north (Perpetual Pavement Test) side and +5 ft, +15 ft, and +25 ft corresponding to the south (Overlay Test) side. Tests were performed at these stations: 0+15, 0+30, 0+65, 0+80, 1+15, 1+30, 1+65, 1+80, 2+15, 2+30, 2+65, and 2+80.

P-401 Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) Material
Lab Characterization tests
Fatigue Tests - Slab samples for 15 beam fatigue tests were cut from the offset -25 ft of CC7 north side. These samples were taken from the LFC5 and LFS6 test sections. Loose P-401 material (10 buckets) was also collected and stored in containers to produce beam fatigue samples in the lab and other tests to be performed at a later date.
APA, Dynamic Modulus, DCT, IDT and Flow Number Tests - 45 Cores from outside of the traffic areas of the top surface of the P-401 were taken to perform these tests. Also, loose P-401 material (20 buckets from the north side and 20 buckets from the south side were collected and stored in containers from the top lift of each test section to produce samples in the lab and performed tests at a later date.
