FAA Drone and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Symposium

Russ Gorman and Garrison Canter, Airport Research Specialists, along with General Engineer Jeremy Casey from the FAA’s Airport Technology Research & Development (ATR) Branch attended the 2024 FAA Drone and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Symposium in Baltimore, Maryland on July 30-Aug 1, 2024. Gorman participated in a panel session on the topic of vertiport design, discussing existing guidance developed by ATR, including Engineering Brief No. 105, Vertiport Design. He also provided updates on ATR’s research, testing, and future guidance development.

Casey was a panelist on the session “Planning for Electric Aircraft: Fire Response and Ground Safety.” This panel discussed the current knowledge of electric aircraft firefighting, ATR’s current research status and pathway, and how to obtain further information as the research progresses. Topics included battery firefighting, rescue operations, anticipated needs for vertiport fire protection, and the unique hazards for electrified aircraft.
