Instrumentation Plan

A total of 144 sensors were originally installed in the RCOD test sections. Specifically, the following instrumentation was installed in each RCOD test section (TO and TT):

• • 40 Surface Strain Gauges (SG)
  • 10 Embedded Strain Gauges (EG)
  • 10 Joint Displacement Gauges (JDG)
  • 5 Joint Opening Gauges (JOG)
  • 12 Thermocouples (T)

The instrumentation location for RCOD test section Temperature and Traffic (TT) can be found . Detailed information regarding sensor installation, type, and calibration can be found in the previous RCOD Phase I Construction Report (FAA, 2020b).

After RCOD Phase II trafficking, all surface strain gauges (SG) failed and were replaced at the TT12, TT23, TT34, TT45 and TT56 sections prior to HVS-A trafficking in Phase III. After trafficking Phase II, out of the ten embedded strain gauges only TT34-EG8-3 survived. Two (2) out of the six (6) sensors in the thermocouple tree located in TT-6 at the bottom of the asphalt overlay and P-154 stopped working. The operable sensors were reused for further data collection during RCOD Phase III. Failed SG were replaced with similar sensors at their original locations to maintain consistency with prior phases and allow for further comparison of the surface responses.
