Vehicle Configuration

The NAPTF test vehicle consists of two carriages, a north carriage and a south carriage, each of which can be configured using up to 10 wheels. In the CC3 test, each carriage was configured with six-wheel and four-wheel (2D) gear. The dimensions of the load configuration are illustrated in the below figure.  The dual spacing was 54 inches and the tandem spacing was 57 inches.

There were two traffic lanes. The north lane was trafficked by a six-wheel triple dual tandem (3D) configuration at 1372-mm (54-in) dual spacing and 1449-mm (57-in) tandem spacing. The south lane was trafficked by a four-wheel dual tandem (DT) configuration at 1372-mm (54-in) dual spacing and 1449-mm (57-in) tandem spacing. Wheel loads were set at 245 kN (55,000 lbs) each. This gives “strut” loads of 1468 kN (330,000 lbs) on the six-wheel side and 979 kN (220,000 lbs) on the four-wheel side. Traffic speed was 4 km/h (2.5 mph).
