Instrumentation Plan
Instrumentation for CC9 was installed in the P-152MR, P-154MR, P-209MR, P-401MR, and P-403MR pavement layers. No instrumentation was installed in the P-307MR Cement Treated Permeable Base layer. Moisture sensors were installed in the P-152MR subgrade layer only. Pressure cells and coil sensors were installed in all subgrade (P-152MR), subbase (P-154MR), and standard base (P-209MR) layers. Thermocouples and strain gauges were installed in asphalt layers (P-401MR and P-403MR) only. Gauge selection was based on reliability, accuracy, and ease of handling at the construction site. The tables below show the purpose of each sensor, and the types and quantity of each gauge along with the test areas they were placed in.
In addition to the five main sensor types, Smart Rocks and Bender Elements are experimental sensors that were installed by universities for research purposes in collaboration with the FAA. Smart rocks have corresponding antennas that were also installed in the pavement to improve the signal.
